SWPBS

                                                SWPBS

School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is a globally recognised, evidence-based framework that helps schools create safe, positive, and inclusive environments where students and staff can thrive.

At Elwood Primary School we know that behaviour is learned and therefore responsible behaviour can be taught. We do not assume that students know the behaviours and social skills that lead to success at school and in life. Therefore, we recognise the need to teach appropriate behaviours through a positive approach that strengthens teacher-student relationships. This requires a consistent and collaborative effort between staff, students and the wider community. When undesired behaviour occurs we use an educative approach, addressing the behaviour calmly, consistently and positively to support student growth and learning.

School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework is an evidence-based framework designed to help schools create positive, safe, and fair settings where students and teachers can thrive.

When SWPBS is implemented well, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom instruction. Students and staff benefit from:

  • increased respectful and positive behaviour
  • increased time focused on instruction
  • improved social-emotional wellbeing
  • positive and respectful relationships among students and staff
  • a predictable learning environment

When implementing the SWPBS framework, schools work to address the eight essential features (listed below) to ensure the approach is effective and sustainable across all school areas.

  1. Establish a common philosophy and purpose
  2. Establish leadership and school-wide support
  3. Clearly define a set of expected behaviours
  4. Establish procedures for teaching and practising expected behaviours
  5. Implement a continuum of procedures to encourage expected behaviours
  6. Develop a continuum of procedures to discourage inappropriate behaviour
  7. Use procedures for record-keeping, decision making and ongoing monitoring
  8. Support staff to use effective classroom practices
