HOUSE ATHLETICS - 6TH & 7TH AUGUST 2009
Athletics season is upon us! Following our three weeks of training for track and field events during Friday sport the year 3-6s were eager to use their athletics skills in the House Athletics.
On Thursday 6th August students competed in the Field events including; high jump, triple jump, long jump, shot put, discus, hurdles, relays and 800m events. The windy weather couldn't hold the athletes back and some fantastic results were achieved. At the end of the day Gordon was top of the scoreboard followed closely by Lawson, Dennis and Paterson.
On Friday 7th August we held our track events and ball games competition. House spirits were high and the cheering was very loud all day. The house captains did a great job of getting their competitors ready to race and the students enthusiasm was fantastic. It was great to see so many students volunteering to go in any race they could. The races included 100m, 200m, 800m, novelty races, sack races and the crowd pleasing School Championship 100m. The place getters in this event were: 1st Jack Lewis, 2nd Miquel Sietu, 3rd Yves Hopkins Gamble - congratulations!
In the afternoon the houses assembled for the ball games including; footy relay, soccer relay, hockey dribble, cross ball and tunnel ball. The rivalry was heating up but the displays of teamwork were really pleasing to see. All students contributed to the many close races during the afternoon.
The athletics carnival was a really fun couple of days which could not have run smoothly without the help of the many parents and teachers who assisted on the day. Particular thanks must go to Cathy Neiwand and Celia Daniels for their work on the score table.
Although the scores were very close throughout the carnival Lawson edged into the lead to win ahead of Gordon, Paterson and Dennis. Well done Lawson! Gordon was awarded the House Spirit Award for their displays of enthusiasm throughout the two days...although this was very hard to pick a winner as all houses were very enthusiastic!
From the results of the house athletics and the trials we have conducted each Friday many students have been selected to represent Elwood at the District Athletics Carnival at Duncan McKinnon Reserve, Murrumbeena on Friday 21st August. We wish them good luck for this event. Go Elwood!
